چکیده

In this paper, we study the bandwidth allocation problem for an ATM multiplexer loaded with heterogeneous low-motion VBR video sources. We propose a cell scheduling scheme which balances cell loss among different sources so that they experience nearly the same cell loss rate. To estimate the bandwidth required by a VBR video source, we characterize its traffic by four parameters: peak rate, mean rate, coefficient of variation, and the coefficient of the autocorrelation function. Based on the effective bandwidth approach and the stationary Gaussian approximation, we derive simple formulas for estimating the required bandwidth using the four traffic parameters. From numerical results, we conclude that the stationary Gaussian approximation seems to be a very promising bandwidth allocation scheme for VBR video sources. The effective bandwidth approach performs not as well as when it is applied to on-off sources due to its incapability in making full use of statistical multiplexing gain. Extra care must be taken to ensure that the QoS requirement is satisfied when using Gaussian approximation in bandwidth allocation because it does not always overestimate the required bandwidth.

Cell Scheduling and Bandwidth Allocation for Heterogeneous Vbr Video Conferencing Traffic

We first propose a new cell loss scheduling scheme, referred to as the QoS-scheme. This scheme can satisfy different individual quality of service (QoS) requirements of a group of virtual channel connections with minimum required bandwidth. We next derive a simple formula based on Gaussian approximation to allocate bandwidth to heterogeneous VBR video conferencing connections. Comparing the pro...

An efficient bandwidth allocation algorithm for real-time VBR stream transmission under IEEE 802.16 wireless networks

This paper investigates variable rate control strategies for real-time multimedia variable bit rate (VBR) services over IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless networks. A data rate control mechanism is derived for the case where the uplink channel provides real-time services and the traffic rate parameter remains constant. This paper shows that the common queuing scheduling algorithms have some bandwid...

Bandwidth Allocation and Analysis of VBR MPEG Video Bit Streams

This paper presents the benefits and challenges in the encoding and delivery of variable bitrate (VBR) MPEG video. The network resources required to transmit stored variable rate MPEG can be reduced by properly analyzing and smoothing the video stream before transmission. A scheduling technique is presented which selects a traffic contract for a pre-encoded MPEG video stream with the criteria o...

VBR video delivery using monotonic-decreasing rate scheduling

Variable-bit-rate (VBR) encoding is known to provide a more consistent visual quality compared to constant-bit-rate (CBR) encoding. However, the resultant bit-rate variations greatly complicated the allocation of disk and network bandwidth in a video-on-demand system. This paper investigates a new scheduling algorithm with monotonic-decreasing rate allocations for scheduling disk retrievals and...
